Highly anticipated documentary from award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy heads to MIPCOM

(Toronto, Canada – September 17, 2026) – Blue Ant Media announced today that it has acquired U.S. and international licensing rights for The Trial of Alec Baldwin. The highly anticipated feature documentary will be introduced to broadcasters and streaming platforms at MIPCOM this October.
Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy (Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, Ethel, Last Days in Vietnam), The Trial of Alec Baldwin follows the actor through the personal and legal fallout from the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021 and the extraordinary legal and media storm that followed. As attention increasingly centered on Alec Baldwin, the case became a flashpoint for broader questions surrounding celebrity, accountability, and the powerful influence of tabloid culture on perceptions of guilt and justice.
“Through Rory Kennedy’s thoughtful and incisive lens, The Trial of Alec Baldwin gives viewers a revealing look at a tragedy that made headlines worldwide.” says Barnaby Shingleton, SVP, Acquisitions, Blue Ant Rights & Streaming. “The film’s extraordinary access puts audiences in the room with Baldwin as key developments unfold, offering a rare perspective on how celebrity, media scrutiny and public perception shaped the case. It’s a globally recognized story that will resonate with viewers who want to look beyond the headlines and better understand this complex case.”
“The tragic events surrounding Rust captured worldwide attention and raised difficult questions about celebrity, media scrutiny and public judgment,” says the film’s Director and Producer, Rory Kennedy. “We want to give audiences around the world an opportunity to see this complex story from a different perspective. I’m pleased to be working with Blue Ant to bring The Trial of Alec Baldwin to platforms internationally.”
The filmmakers approached Baldwin about his participation in their documentary in March of 2023 and began filming later that spring. Featuring previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary reconstructs the events surrounding Hutchins’ death. Kennedy and her partner, Writer and Producer, Mark Bailey, trace how an incident initially understood as a devastating accident evolved into an intensely scrutinized criminal case. Against a relentless cycle of headlines, social-media commentary and paparazzi attention, Baldwin’s fame, political outspokenness and complicated public image increasingly shaped the narrative surrounding the tragedy. The film considers the divide between the facts of a legal case and the story constructed around a prominent public figure. It also explores how quickly public judgment can take hold—and the extent to which reputation, personality and media coverage can influence who is blamed long before a case reaches the courtroom.
The documentary was acquired for Blue Ant by Valentina Daley, VP Acquisitions, Blue Ant Rights & Streaming, and is being distributed globally following its launch in Cannes.
The Trial of Alec Baldwin will have a theatrical premiere in select theatres across the U.S. beginning on October 1. Abramorama holds the U.S. theatrical licensing rights to the documentary.
