Toronto, ON (May 10, 2017) – Cottage Life is celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday with an exclusive interview in the early summer issue of Cottage Life magazine featuring the world’s most famous Canadian, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Prime Minister talks candidly with Cottage Life about his life-long love of the outdoors, the summers his family spent at both their rustic cottage and Canada’s official cottage on Harrington Lake, and the time he scared off a bear as a camp counsellor. Complementing this exclusive editorial feature will be an online video in which Editor-in-Chief, Michelle Kelly, asks the Prime Minister rapid-fire questions revealing his preference on some time-honoured Canadian traditions such as butter tarts, campfires, and marshmallows.
“Sharing Justin Trudeau’s love for the outdoors and his own cottage legacy in our magazine is the best way imaginable to extend such a beloved Canadian tradition to both loyal and new audiences,” said Michelle Kelly, Editor-in-Chief, Cottage Life magazine. “This summer Cottage Life is offering a special multi-platform collection of content that celebrates what our audiences love about cottaging.”
Cottage Life’s summer-long Canada 150 celebration is also inspired by growing the love and appreciation of cottaging and outdoor living with Canadians coast-to-coast, via its Grow it Forward Canada initiative. Readers and viewers will enjoy Canada 150-inspired articles and online videos and a documentary specially created for Canada’s birthday, rolling out over the coming months across the multi-platform brand’s magazine, television channel, Cottagelife.com, and its social media platforms. Cottage Life’s Canada 150 content will be shared on social media with the hashtag #growitforward and will be available on a central online microsite on Cottagelife.com.
Multi-platform highlights of Cottage Life’s Canada 150 summer-long celebration:
Cottage Life magazine’s early summer print issue
Alongside its exclusive interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the early summer issue of Cottage Life is packed with articles specially curated to celebrate Canada 150, including heart-warming personal stories that share how cottages and cabins have played a role in the lives of Canadians across the country. One story delves into the charm of a dilapidated shack that a BC couple enjoys to juxtapose their fast-changing modern lives and another chronicles an Ontario family’s thrill of collecting sap from maple trees for the first time. The magazine also challenges readers to plant a native tree on their cottage property in an editorial feature, complete with illustrated tree facts, that champions the value of creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy the outdoors.
Exclusive videos on Cottagelife.com
Following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s light-hearted video Q&A, Cottagelife.com will delight audiences with more videos starring famous Canadians giving on-the-spot answers that showcase their cottage spirit. Cottage Life will also offer audiences a brand new lineup of online videos featuring everyday Canadians who have embraced cottage living in new and unexpected ways. These online videos include: the story of a Canadian man who hosts refugees at his cottage to immerse them in a quintessential moment of Canadian life; a look at Canada’s oldest tree that dates back to the year 1500; a group that teaches visually impaired citizens to sail; and the story of couple who leave the city behind to grow fresh vegetables on their cottage property and donate a percentage of their produce to local Canadian food banks.
Digital editorial series on Cottagelife.com
Over the coming months, Cottagelife.com will roll out a special, in-depth editorial series celebrating Parks Canada’s summer-long free pass by going deep into a select group of national parks to seek out the hidden gems that make them worth the journey. The collection of articles will include first-person, photo journalistic essays accompanied by stunning image galleries. Cottage Life’s online fans will be treated to incredible, yet rarely seen, locations tucked away in Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park, Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park, and the Yukon’s Kluane National Park, to name a few.
An original documentary on Cottage Life’s TV channel
Rounding out the summer-long celebration, Cottage Life will premiere The Secret History of Cottages, an exclusive, 30-minute original documentary that explores the history of cottaging in Canada and how it has evolved over several decades.
